Sometimes a technology can spend years searching for an application. That's what happened to mobile couponing. It took nearly seven years, but the advertising industry finally began catching up with the technology this week.
The acquisition makes sense for ReachLocal because the company specializes in helping small businesses advertise online but glaringly did not have a daily deals offering.
I spoke this afternoon with ReachLocal CEO Zorik Gordon. He told me that Reach evaluated a large number of the white-label providers and picked DealOn because of the founders/team, the white-label capability and the OfferEx exchange. He sees ReachLocal and DealOn now sourcing deals for other publishers and distribution partners, as well as maintaining the white label business.
ReachLocal will be snagging DealOn's unique OfferEx platform, which allows other daily deal sites and publishers to supply or resell deals on an open platform.
As speculation about a Groupon acquisition persists, marketing services firm ReachLocal announced a deal of its own today with the purchase of DealOn Media. The acquisition, valued at $10 million, gives ReachLocal a ready-made local deals offering for its small business advertiser clients. Key to the deal is DealOn’s offers exchange, which pairs deal suppliers with deals publishers.
"We see the opportunities in supplying publishers with quality deals to sell on their sites, because they don't have the resources to do it themselves."- Zorik Gordon
Now, ReachLocal’s 700 salespeople will use DealOn to sell daily deals for small businesses to a variety of Web publishers, from big media sites to small blogs, who want to compete with Groupon.
Zorik Gordon, chief executive of ReachLocal, said the company upgraded its services with a package called ReachCast in December to go beyond search engines and display ads. ReachCast includes a Facebook page, a Twitter account and monitoring where a business has been mentioned on the Internet.
Bizzy, a personalized local business recommendation engine, announced yesterday that it hit 100,000 favorites in just 10 weeks since its relaunch — that is, its members have supplied 100,000 recommendations on their favorite places to eat, shop and play.
"[Douglas Schwartz of Executive Limousine] has been relying heavily on Facebook and ReachLocal, which places ads on multiple sites aimed at a business’s local audience."
